While the world’s headlines may have moved on, the war in Ukraine has not. Every day, drones and bombs still target Ukrainian cities, often striking power grids and leaving homes, schools, and businesses operating on just a few hours of electricity a day. In the midst of this turmoil, the most vulnerable victims are the children—children who have now endured three years of sirens, bomb shelters, and disrupted schooling.
A Place of Refuge Taken Away from Ukraine’s Children
This is Salome—a bright, gifted young Ukrainian girl who speaks multiple languages and plays several instruments.
Her love for learning is unmistakable, and her potential is limitless. But for years now, much of her schooling has taken place under the ground, in bomb shelters, during what should have been ordinary school days.
Then the unimaginable happened. Just days after students left for summer break, two hypersonic missiles struck her school and destroyed it completely.
Today, Salome is back in class—but every morning she carries a fear no child should ever have to bear. In Ukraine, when the sirens sound, it doesn’t always mean “take shelter.” Sometimes it means the missiles will hit.
This is the reality for Ukrainian children and their families. Even school is no longer a safe place.
A Nation in Need
In Ukraine, many schools can only operate if they have bomb shelters. This means half of the schools remain closed, and the ones that are open run in shifts. Children either attend school for half a day in the morning or half a day in the afternoon, spending the rest of their time in fear or sheltering from attacks. Schools have been bombed and destroyed, and some days, children spend entire school days in shelters rather than classrooms.
On top of that, the orphan crisis in Ukraine has worsened. Each month, hundreds of new orphans enter a system that’s already strained to the breaking point. With social networks and care structures largely collapsed under the weight of war, there simply isn’t a place for these children to turn.

This is where Kingdom Bridges is stepping in. Through our Children’s Restoration Centers, hosted by five partner churches in Ukraine, we’re offering a lifeline. These centers fill the gaps in the children’s day when they’re not in school. They provide a hot meal, a safe space, caring adults to listen and pray with them, fun activities, life skills training, and tutoring. For many of these children, it’s the only place where they experience stability and love.
